“Biological” or “Biocompatible” dentistry typically refers to dental practices that utilize mercury-free and mercury-safe dentistry while also considering the impact of dental conditions, devices, and treatments on oral and systemic health, including the biocompatibility of dental materials and techniques.
In using the term biological dentistry, we are not attempting to stake out a new specialty for dentistry but rather to describe a philosophy that can apply to all facets of dental practice and to health care in general: Always seek the safest, least toxic way to accomplish the mission of treatment, all the goals of modern dentistry, and do it while treading as lightly as possible on the patient’s biological terrain. A more biocompatible approach to oral health is the hallmark of biological dentistry.
In our office, we use only BPA free materials for composite fillings as well as fluoride free polishing compounds. As an alternative to fluoride rinses for the prevention of cavities, we offer probiotic lozenges to help in the decolonization of “good” bacteria in the oral cavity, which can aid the body in its own reparative process to combat breakdown and decay.
